Professional Development
My goal as a consultant and coach is to help all participants collaborate as respectfully and productively as possible.
My consultative process consists of
1) learning about a site or a team’s goals
2) framing an understanding of the current status of a site team.
3) building on team, as well as individual, strengths
3) surfacing any challenges or concerns
4) working with all parties to set a mutually-agreed-upon plan of action for moving ahead according to established group goals.
I believe that everyone involved in the learning process has something valuable to offer, and I listen intently to each perspective. When we understand our collective goal, we can help each individual see how their strengths can contribute to our collaborative success. I see difference of opinion and conflict as a strength, as it clarifies our values and process, and I stay vibrantly engaged with groups as we work through discord together to find a common way forward.
I specialize in:
– Standards-based curriculum and assessment
– National Core Arts Standards
– Backwards Design/Understanding By Design
– Building meaningful units of study that reach beyond content
– Professional Learning Communities (the topic of my Master’s thesis)
– Coaching individual teachers
– Increasing capacity in Arts Teacher Leaders
– Helping music educators understand and embrace broader educational initiatives
Possible consulting formats:
- In person
- On-site consulting
- Session presentation
- Individual coaching
- Group coaching
- Remote/Online/Video conference
- Individual coaching
- Group coaching
- Session presentation
- Review/Audit of curriculum (vertical alignment, EUs/EQs, assessments, units, scope and sequence, etc)
Because I believe that each community possesses unique qualities, I tailor each consulting session according to the needs of the individual needs/desires of each site. Video conference planning with teachers and curriculum leaders (and others, if desired) in advance of a consulting visit is available and encouraged.
Keynote Speaker
One of my greatest passions is to inspire music educators to think more broadly and more inclusively. As a keynote speaker, I aspire to frame a conference and/or meeting with big-picture, connective, challenging, and inspiring questions. By incorporating the theme of YOUR conference or workshop into our planning, I can deliver a keynote that speaks directly to the needs and challenges of your audience.
Possible topics could include
– What is the future of music education?
– What is transfer and why is education talking about it?
– How can assessment transform both students and teachers?
– How do we prioritize learning in a sea of standards?
– How can enduring understanding and essential questions empower teachers and students?
Honor Choir Conductor
I love working with young musicians! As an honor choir conductor, I seek to create a comprehensive experience for all participants. From diverse repertoire to learning the context of songs, students experience much more than just high-caliber singing. They learn about why we sing, why it matters and finally, how it changes us and the world. Every time I have the opportunity to conduct and honor choir, I am humbled by the incredible students and communities who create these rich opportunities. Repertoire can be tailored to suit specific occasions and celebrations.
Coaching
Everyone needs a champion. Maybe even more than one!
It is one of my greatest joys to help individual teachers reach their own goals and highest potential.
Through coaching — whether a single session or ongoing consultations — I help teachers find their own priorities, inner resource and inherent creativity to manifest their goals and dreams. I offer feedback, reframe possibilities and add wisdom to your thinking – and support you as your move forward.
